Lessons from a Billion Pound Business
Who you hang around with matters - alot!
Hanging around other business people is so inspiring.
I am literally a sponge when it comes to listening to other business folk sharing their stories, anecdotes, business lessons, ideas and advice on how they have grown their businesses and also steered them through tough times too.
So it was great last week to spend time listening to and chatting with David McDowall the COO and President of Brewdog. They are a billion pound business and have been on a wild business journey over the last few years but so many of the stories David shared resonated with so many people in the room.
It was great to hear that his take on business was that we're all in the same boat and whatever the size (be it rowing boat or cruise liner) we all experience the same issues - the only real difference being the scale of the challenges faced. I loved the story he told about when Tescos asked them to put their brand into 800 stores and they didn't have the capacity, resource or brewing facilities to do that but they just said 'yes' then worked it out afterwards!
Hearing stories of cash flow challenges, pivoting products, having to work in 'dog years' (that's achieving in one month what it would normally take to do in seven!), thinking out of the box, constantly innovating, raising money and navigating staff challenges too was a refreshing reminder that we're all on a journey in business.
And those that last and thrive, despite all the challenges, are the ones who never give up, maintain that burning desire to succeed and, in their eyes, never fail - they either 'win' or 'learn'!
